Born and raised in Virginia, Carol married a career military officer in 1974. Moving so often she was termed “a traveling printmaker” by one newspaper, Carol and her etching press have logged major mileage with 16 military moves. Settled now in Portsmouth, Rhode Island with her husband, she is enjoying creating art in her home studio overlooking the Sakonnet River, teaching advanced printmaking at the Providence Art Club, and being curator of Gallery 297 in Bristol, Rhode Island and Congress Street Gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Carol first studied printmaking at Hollins College where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Art. After seeing a 1978 Contemporary Print Exhibition in Boston, she was so struck by the power and beauty of the intaglio images that she went back to school to formally study the medium. Carol went on to become a partner in Printmakers Inc. workshop/gallery in the nationally acclaimed Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia for nine years.

Ms. FitzSimonds served on the board of the new Art League Rhode Island as a founding artist member. Author of print articles for the Journal of the Print World and The Artist's Magazine, Carol has served as juror of selection for several organizations including the National Association of Women Artists. Her prints, drawings and original artist's books have receive numerous awards in juried exhibitions across the country and are found in such collections as the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the Zimmerli Art Museum, the National Museum of Women the Arts, and the United States Library of Congress.
